Discover your unique home design style with our expert tips and tricks. From traditional to modern, we'll help you find the perfect materials for your home.
If you've never thought about this before, you might not realize you have a design style.
I used to think design style was just for interior designers and beautiful magazine spreads. You don't need to fit into a precisely named category because I think a mashed-up version of multiple styles usually exists in our homes.
But noticing your style is not something I find most people have thought about.
I have worked with some homeowners who know the precise finish, shape, and style of each material they want to use in their remodel from the beginning. They send me a list, and we're all set.
The norm, however, is most homeowners have yet to think beyond; I want to remodel this space. You have a full life, and finding time in your calendar to get the project started is worth applauding!
Besides, choosing materials is one of my favorite parts, and I would LOVE to help you through the process.
It's much simpler than you might think, and you already use these skills all the time. I also believe you can complete the following steps in 5-10 minute bites.
Collect
Collect photos of the space you're remodeling. My favorite app for home design is Pinterest. I've tried others; they're not my jam, but you can use your favorite app; it serves the same purpose. Collect at least 10-20 photos of the room's different areas. For a bathroom, include pictures of showers you like, tub areas, and vanity areas. For a kitchen, include cabinetry, stove areas, sink areas, and islands. I love the feature of Pinterest, which, once you tap on a pin you like, lists "more to explore" pins below with similar elements.
Observe
Look at your collection of pins on Pinterest
This is where the magic happens. We make decisions in split seconds, most times without realizing what was behind the decisions. So, we're slowing things down to observe the whys behind your pin decisions (or saves, whatever method you use). When I pull up my Pinterest board on a laptop or desktop, I can see more pins at once, and I begin noticing colors first, then styles and shapes.
List
Write down your observations
Now, write down your observations, such as the main colors you like, hardware finishes, and hardware shapes. The point of all of this is to have a good idea of what you like before you step into a remodeling timeline. But, if you'd rather wait and do this together, I am happy to walk you through observing and honing in on those observations.
I made a tidy little download for you, adding examples to each step. It's short and sweet, without wasted space that you don't like to scroll through. (I don't like that either!)
If you're in the Coeur d'Alene-Spokane area, let me know how I can walk you through this step or any others in your remodeling process. I like learning about each person's unique home design style: traditional with mix-and-match hardware, moody with matte black, or creamy white with chrome. It's fun to create a space that matches your personality!
