One Palette, Endless Bathroom Design Ideas

Did you know one design palette can be used to create endless, unique spaces?

Hi there! I wanted to discuss design palettes and their usefulness for creating your perfect room. If you've spent any time on Pinterest looking for home inspiration, you most likely have seen a design palette. But, in case you haven't, I'm happy to dive in.

What is a design palette?

A design palette is simply a collection of your favorite colors and textures arranged next to each other to see how well they work together. This is different than a design board, which is a collection of the items you have selected or are considering, like a chandelier or faucet.

Palettes can be detailed or simple.

Simple design palettes typically have one or two main colors and an accenting color. A more detailed palette would be used when designing your decor in addition to remodeling; it would include textures, patterns and unique details.

But no matter what, your design palette is a visual organizational tool that assists you in confidently designing your space. If you're remodeling or building, you're designing.

Using a design palette

Some homeowners already know what they want when they approach us and are partnering to accomplish their vision. But others come to us excited about one or two elements, colors, or tones, so our partnership begins with discovering and building their design palette.

Either way, the fun begins!

For this article, I created a simple design palette for a bathroom using some of my favorite colors and tones: green, gold, white, and mid-tone wood. Pretty!

The colors and tones have not been assigned to a specific area or item of the room but have been selected to guide the process. To exemplify a few of the possibilities, I have put together a few design boards with this palette.

For Bathroom A, I used green for the vanity, gold hardware, white shower wall and floor tile, and light/medium wood-look tile for the bathroom flooring.

Giving the vanity the color green really pops that area and allows the warmth of the champagne gold to frame it. The shower is a neutral creamy white that twins with the tub area. Then, the flooring is a wood-look tile that gives the room warmth on the floor as well.

In Bathroom B, I switched up the vanity and tile colors. The white vanity now gives that area a neutral elegance, and the pop of color draws the eye to the shower walls. It's all still wrapped in the warmth of the champagne-gold hardware and wood-look tile flooring.

The palette hasn't changed, yet the aesthetic is a bit softer, and the hardware pops more around the vanity area.

I shifted things around once more ...

For Bathroom C, the flooring is a marble pinwheel mosaic tile in shades of green and white. (It looks beautiful close up and when taking in the full space.) The vanity is a medium wood tone, and the champagne gold hardware blends seamlessly, allowing the furniture to be featured. There's still plenty of warmth in this bathroom, as well as creamy neutrals that let the champagne gold hardware shine.

Another beautiful bathroom with the original palette.

But what if this style isn't your jam? In my design style, I tend to lean traditional and classic with elements of modernity.

Maybe you like the placement of the colors and tones from Bathroom A but not the shapes and style. You can easily change the aesthetic!

For example, switch the shower walls to a bright white metallic honeycomb, the shower floor tile to neutral pebble, modernize and float the vanity, sleek down the hardware, and match the tub and toilet style to the room. The bathroom now has a mid-century modern vibe.

That's how versatile a design palette can be and why they are so popular on social media!

Each person can use the same palette for inspiration and create endless bathroom design ideas that are entirely unique spaces, and I love that! Design styles change the way the room feels just as much as color and tone.

On a side note, I know that gold is a polarizing option! It seems people either love it or hate it. So, just for fun, here are Bathroom C's design boards in a darker oil-rubbed bronze, another tone that I find absolutely gorgeous. Also, I do this all the time for clients who are working on selecting their hardware.

To recap, design palettes are practical guides for remodeling, helping you create a springboard for selecting items and materials.

Whether you want your vanity area to stand out or your shower area to be the focal point, the beauty of design palettes lies in their limitless integration possibilities.
