The remodeling of this ensuite began with an inspiration photo and is one of my favorite ensuite remodels we have completed. Its beautiful design palette blends classic and modern elements that I'm excited to share it with you!
In preparation for remodeling her ensuite bathroom, the homeowner spent time on Pinterest, where she became drawn to an elegant, timeless design style.
Soft, neutral walls, wood flooring in medium tones, and white subway tile paired with marble mosaic tile trimmed with dark grout were the consistent elements of pins flowing through her Pinterest board.
Her ultimate inspiration came from a photo she found of an ensuite that utilized the desired attributes and happened to be in a layout consistent with hers.
With these details in mind, we began piecing together her bathroom.
Right away, we found matches to the tile in the inspiration photo: a soft white 4in x 12in subway tile in an ever-so-slightly irregular shape for the shower walls and a Carrara marble mosaic tile in a herringbone pattern for the shower floor, both using dark gray grout.
The shower walls would again be glass surrounds, but this time with matte black edging and a better-accommodating door swing. The shared half-wall with the tub area would be narrowed, and a shower bench would be added.
The tub area had a chunky, built-in garden tub and would need to be demoed. This would maximize the space for a white freestanding tub and pretty white wainscoting along the bottom portion of the walls. The area would be completed by installing a floor-mounted tub filler in the back right corner. Chefs kiss!
Now for the jewelry of the room ...
The homeowner decided that all the faucets would be matte black and non-identical but well coordinated. So, the combination of a sleek high-arc floor-mounted tub filler, a circular shower head with a rounded edge and a gently-arced arm, and a high-arc widespread faucet with a rounded edge on the spout were selected.
The original vanity had been quite dark, and the homeowner wanted to lighten and open the area. After considering various options, a 72-inch grey oak furniture-style vanity with double sinks and a Carrara white marble top was chosen. The homeowner was particularly drawn to the grey oak for its ability to add a touch of modernity to the space and the Carrara marble top for its timeless elegance.
Rectangular gold-rimmed recessed medicine cabinet mirrors were selected and placed above each sink. Each mirror was then topped with a 22-inch 3-bulb matte gold and glass globe vanity light to add a touch of luxury to the space.
This brought us to the flooring ...
A lot of thought was given to selecting the flooring. Each product has numerous attributes that can be discussed in multiple ways, and I truly enjoy this part of the process. I like to learn how each person approaches materials and what they are looking for. Then, we can pivot or narrow the search based on what is said.
This homeowner initially had decided on a wood-look tile, but throughout the process, she realized she was not a fan of the grout lines. This led to discussing luxury vinyl or laminate plank flooring that fits together without spacing. We pulled samples to coordinate with the vanity, and the winner was a light/medium warmth of LVP.
And finally, the finishing touches ...
The barn-style entry door didn't match the design the homeowner was going for, so French doors were selected. As a bonus, the French doors, with their five opaque panels each and rectangular rosette dummy doorknobs in vintage bronze (which matched their existing door handles), brought in natural light and elegance.
Lastly, using Sherwin-Williams paint, a light taupe color was chosen for the walls. The homeowner was particularly drawn to this color because it created a light yet warm and inviting atmosphere. A fresh white was selected for the trim work and doors to provide a clean and crisp contrast to the taupe walls.
You can enjoy the same process ...

The material decision step is a lot of fun, but it can also feel overwhelming at times as you become surrounded by beautiful options you hadn't known existed.
No worries; it's totally normal and will most likely happen at least once.
This guide is meant to become a reference for whenever that pretty mosaic tile in the pattern I've never considered before might just work with ... and it's that easy!
